SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Sergio Nava wants the city of Tijuana to bring residents closer to nature by bringing more nature to the city.
Nava, of the Revive Sensible Cities program in Mexico, says the city of Tijuana lacks green space, parks, playgrounds and nature walks, especially on its east side.
He is urging city leaders to launch studies that will determine where green spaces are needed the most, studies that could be done by the end of February.
This is all part of a program called “planting cities.”
The idea also calls for the revitalization and installation of playgrounds for children throughout the city.
It also involves building a space where native plants and trees can be planted, pollinated and grown for future use around Tijuana.
Tijuana is one of four cities throughout Mexico selected for the program, which is sponsored in part by Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture.
“This will impact different sectors of the city, especially areas around schools, health facilities and government offices,” said Nora Márquez Carvajal, head of Tijuana’s National Planning Institute.
The city is expected to consider the project during its upcoming council meeting next week.
