Border Report – Pollster: 70 percent of young people don’t vote in Baja California

Posted on January 19, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — A public relations professional who conducts polls south of the border says less than 30 percent of young voters in Baja California choose to participate in elections.

Pepe Avelar believes not enough is being done to encourage college students to go to the polls.

Presidential election bodes rocky road for US-Mexico relations

He said during the last 30 years, “political participation has deteriorated” steadily.

“College students aren’t motivated to get involved,” said Avelar. “I’ve seen a decline in participation from students arriving at universities.”

Voter registration deadline looms for Mexicans living abroad

Avelar blames parents for not influencing their children to vote.

“Young people don’t share a responsibility to do it. This has to start in our houses trying to get our children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren to participate in elections.”

Avelar said his surveys show that only 30 percent of young people who are registered to vote take the time to cast ballots and expects the same pattern to continue during the upcoming presidential election later this year in Mexico.
