McAllen, Texas (Border Report) — A convicted felon who is a member of the notorious Mexican Mafia gang has been sentenced for again possessing firearms, U.S. Attorney Alamdar Hamdani said.
Alonso Guerrero Garcia, 40, pleaded guilty in November, Hamdani said Tuesday.
A judge in Corpus Christi, Texas, sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
Evidence presented in court this week included information that Guerrero in June used the firearm to “forcibly abduct two individuals at gunpoint,” according to a news release.
Prosecutors say Guerrero was apprehended after a traffic stop on a vehicle speeding the wrong way down a one-way street on June 3 in Corpus Christi.
He was in the rear seat of the vehicle where authorities discovered a Springfield Armor Champion 9mm pistol with gold grips and Aztec markings under the driver’s seat of the vehicle.
Authorities also found photos of Guerrero holding the distinctive firearm.
Guerrero had previously been convicted of possessing a firearm, aggravated assault, and manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance.
As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm under federal law.
The Mexican Mafia, also known as La eMe (The “M”) is a Mexican-American criminal organization.
Guerrero is in custody and will be transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility, Hamdani said.
