El Paso Matters – EPISD superintendent’s contract extended 5 years; no pay raise

Posted on January 26, 2024

The El Paso Independent School District’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Thursday to extend Superintendent Diana Sayavedra’s contract for another five years after a closed door discussion.

This new contract comes without a pay raise, but she did get a $20,000 payment toward a retirement account.

Sayavedra is making $320,000 a year under an amended contract that gave her a $43,000 pay raise in January 2023.

The superintendent has been leading the district since January 2022. At the time, her contract was set to run until January 2025.

She was the district’s first permanent superintendent since Juan Cabrera resigned in November 2020 after he was sued for his involvement in a charter school scheme.

In recent months, she has been mired with accusations of poor transparency and a lack of accountability within the district. These accusations came after the district dropped mandatory daily physical education for elementary school students and an administrative error that led some teachers to miss out on a stipend.

Sayavedra could qualify for another pay raise during her next annual evaluation in 2025.
