EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A bipartisan group of legislators are working to put the finishing touches on a senate bill that hopes to combine funding for Ukraine, Israel and Tawain with southern border security.
Only negotiators of the bill have been able to see what the proposal holds. However, per the Congressional Grapevine, Senate Republicans have been calling it the “toughest border reform bills ever.”
During a congressional briefing on Jan.31, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, D-Texas said she was “very disappointed with the way that the President framed addressing what is happening at the southern border.”
The congresswoman said she firmly believes “congress has failed in its duty and obligation to legislate around this issue.”
Her statements came after President Joe Biden said he would shut down the border as soon as the bipartisan border bill was signed into law.
Representative Escobar said:
“We’ve now been essentially wasting time in congress not passing the supplemental (request) which would actually provide more resources for communities like ours, provide for more resources for homeland security and address the immediate need that exists.”
KTSM 9 News reached out to Representative Tony Gonzales, R-Texas for his stance but was told the congressman would hold off on commenting until he is able to see the full contents of the bill.
Lead Republican negotiator, Sen. James Lankford, R-Oklahoma says legislators are getting closer to releasing text of their proposed deal in the coming days.
