KTSM News – NM State men look to slow Liberty’s three-point shooting on Thursday

Posted on February 1, 2024

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – After a winless road trip at Sam Houston and Louisiana Tech last week, New Mexico State will return home for a pair of home games on Thursday and Saturday against Liberty and Jacksonville State, respectively.

The Aggies (9-12, 3-3 CUSA) will start the homestand against the Flames, who were picked to win Conference USA before the season, but come into Thursday’s clash just 2-4 in CUSA play (13-8 overall).

All nine of NMSU’s wins this season have come at the Pan American Center, where the Aggies have looked formidable at times. Across CUSA, only three teams have won road games (just four total road wins) during conference play, so the Aggies aren’t alone in their road woes.

NMSU will look to once again defend its home court vs. Liberty on Thursday. The Flames take and make a lot of three-pointers, ranking in the top 10 nationally in both categories.

When they’re on, Liberty has been fantastic, winning games over Charlotte, Vermont and Wichita State. However, when shots haven’t fallen, the undersized Flames have been vulnerable, as their 2-4 CUSA record shows.

If the Aggies are able to sweep their homestand like they have each of the first two home weekends of CUSA play, NMSU would get to 5-3 in league action. As it stands currently, they’re only two games back of first place LA Tech and Sam Houston in a jumbled CUSA, where all nine teams are separated by a total of just three games.

The Aggies and Flames will get underway at 7 p.m. on Thursday night at the Pan American Center.
