(NEXSTAR) — King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and is now receiving treatment, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.
“During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” a statement released Monday read. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”
The statement did not elaborate on the testing or the specific diagnosis.
“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” Buckingham Palace continued. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”
It also said Charles “remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”
The 75-year-old monarch was admitted to the London Clinic on Jan. 26 for treatment of an enlarged prostate. Three days later, he was seen walking out of the clinic with his wife, Queen Camilla.
Charles, who ascended the throne 16 months ago, was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate on Jan. 17 after he experienced undisclosed symptoms. The king decided to announce the surgery in advance in an effort to encourage other men to have their prostates checked in line with public health advice.
In Monday’s statement, the Palace explained Charles chose “to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
Details of royal health are always a tricky issue in the U.K., because members of the monarchy are private individuals but also, in a sense, public property.
Kate, Princess of Wales, also underwent surgery last month. Royal officials described it as a “planned” abdominal surgery that involved an extended hospital stay. She isn’t expected to return to public duties until April.
