EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Border Patrol Agents from Alpine, Texas seized more than 530 pounds of marijuana during a vehicle stop approximately one mile south of the Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 385 on Sunday, Feb. 4, according to U.S. CBP.
CBP says at around 9 a.m. that Sunday, agents from the Alpine station noticed a vehicle pulled off on the shoulder of Highway 385 south of the check point.
The agents performed a welfare check on the vehicle and questioned the driver, a Cuban national.
Bundles covered by a blanket were then discovered in the back of the vehicle, and a canine indicated the presence of narcotics. The bundles tested positive to marijuana, according to CBP.
The driver was then arrested for possesion of marijuana. CBP says a total of 19 bundles of marijuana were seized, weighing a total of 530.29 pounds with an estimated street value of $424,232.
CBP says the case and the narcotics have been turned over to the DEA for further investigation and prosecution.
