KTSM News – Tornillo ISD suspends football program for 2 seasons, citing low numbers

Posted on February 9, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Tornillo Independent School District school board voted to suspend the varsity football program for the next two seasons on Thursday, citing low numbers of participants, KTSM learned on Friday.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football first reported the news. The move will affect the football team at the varsity level and was made because of low participation and to avoid the risk of injury to remaining players.

Tornillo has struggled in recent years on the football field, due in part to low participation. The Coyotes haven’t won a game since 2020, going 0-30 from 2021-2023.

Tornillo had to forfeit its final four games of the 2022 season due to a lack of players and in 2023, the Coyotes lost every game by at least 43 points.

The decision by Tornillo leaves the newly-formed District 3-3A Division II with just three teams, one week after it was formed. Tornillo’s exit leaves Anthony, Alpine and Crane left to figure out what will happen. A meeting for the remaining schools to decide next steps will be held on Monday.
