Posted on February 16, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Baja California Gov. Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda recently met with Arizona Gov. Kattie Hobbs, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego and other leaders from the state of Arizona.

Ávila Olmeda said the goal was to create business links and relationships between Baja California and Arizona.

She said they also want to increase opportunities and “grow talent” of young people in both states to create a “more prosperous future.” Student exchange programs at the university level were part of the discussion.

Baja’s governor also met with representatives from a company called Footprint. According to its website, it engineers fiber-based packaging in an effort to address the environmental crisis of plastic pollution by using plant-based fiber alternatives to plastic. These materials are considered compostable, biodegradable, and recyclable.

During their meeting, Hobbs, Gallego and others discussed near-shoring opportunities within the semiconductor, aerospace and medical industries were brought up. Nearshoring is a business practice that entails moving operations or resources to a nearby country.
