The El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees has outlined the process to appoint a new member to the District 3 seat, which was left vacant after former Trustee Josh Acevedo was elected to the El Paso City Council in January.
The board on Tuesday unanimously approved the process, which will include a candidate forum.
The board will begin taking applications on Friday, Feb. 23. The board will require applications to be notarized and include a sworn statement signature. District staff said this measure was included after the board in 2017 appointed a trustee who lied about her education and work history.
The deadline to apply is March 26. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have resided in Texas 12 months and in EPISD’s District 3 for at least six months.
A candidate forum is expected to be held sometime between April 1 and 3. During the forum, applicants will answer questions submitted by community groups, which could include the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, teachers unions and student council, among others.
The board will make its final decision during a special board meeting in April. The selected candidate would serve through May 2025, when the next school board elections will be held.
