MIDLAND, Texas (KTSM) – The Chapin High School boys basketball team secured a 30-29 win over Amarillo Palo Duro in a nail-biting contest at Legacy High School in Midland, Texas.
Palo Duro had possession with 30.2 seconds left in the contest with the game tied at 29. Chapin forced a turnover with 14 seconds left and then Savion Jordan was fouled on a lay-up attempt with 9.6 seconds left. Jordan missed the first free throw and made the second to put Chapin up 30-29.
After Jordan’s made free throw, Palo Duro called a timeout and moved the ball up past halfcourt before Chapin knocked the ball out of bounds with 2.1 seconds left. Palo Duro then called a timeout right after.
On the ensuing inbounds play, Palo Duro’s Koy Sims, who was guarded by Mudia Gbowa, dribbled baseline and was unable to get a shot off as time expired.
With the win, Chapin advanced to the Class 5A Regional Semifinal round of the UIL Texas Boys State Basketball Championships. This is Chapin’s fourth straight trip to the Sweet 16. Up next, Chapin will square off against Colleyville Heritage.
Earlier in the day at Legacy High School, Andress suffered a 61-32 loss to Amarillo in the Class 5A Regional Quarterfinal round. Eagles finish the season with a 20-13 record under head coach Eugene Costello.
“Very proud of this group, man. I can’t tell you from the start of the season to where they are right now, how resilient they have become since the start of the season,” Costello said. “I couldn’t be more proud. I am super, super proud of the way they competed to the last horn.”
“We’ve been through a lot this year. We just talked about before the game that nobody went through what we went through,” Andress senior guard Cam Gulley said. “We had like a mental lapse in the beginning of the season, but we did do a lot for us to be where we are now.”
In the Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal, Anthony fell 72-43 to Plains at Artesia High School on Tuesday. Anthony finished its 2023-24 season with a 23-9 overall record. That’s the Wildcats’ first winning season since the 2017-2018 campaign where it went 14-9.
