Border Report – Thousands to march in Tijuana in support of International Women’s Day

Posted on March 8, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Thousands of women in Tijuana are expected to march in support of International Women’s Day, and men are being asked to avoid joining in on the demonstrations.

“Men should respect their space and not intervene or interfere during the demonstrations,” said Jorge Álvaro Ochoa Orduño, head of the Baja California Human Rights Commission.

Large demonstrations in Tijuana have become the norm since 2021.

Ochoa Orduño is also asking the women taking part in the marches to refrain from acts of violence and vandalism.

Tijuana Police has said it will provide safety and security for participants and those observing the marches.

Officers will also direct traffic away from major intersections where protests are planned.

In previous years, there have been clashes with police and dozens of arrests have been made.

International Women’s Day is held around the world every year on March 8.

According to organizers, it is a push for a “world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination … a world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive, where difference is valued and celebrated.”

And it’s a day to:

Celebrate women’s achievements

Educate and raise awareness about women’s equality

Call for positive change advancing women

Lobby for accelerated gender parity

Fundraise for women-focused charities
