Border Report – Hazmat rollover temporarily closes World Trade Bridge in Laredo

Posted on March 11, 2024

McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — The World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, was temporarily closed Monday after a big rig hauling fuel rolled over on the U.S. side, police said.

The international bridge, which connects Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, was shut down after the crash at the intersection of Mines Road and Loop 20, or Interstate 69, a busy road about a mile east of the international bridge.

“This accident has been updated to a Hazmat event. The tanker was carrying fuel, and as a result the World Trade Bridge is temporarily closed,” Laredo Police posted on Facebook.

‘Roadblocks’ to border bridge construction projects lifted, lawmakers say

Last month, the bridge shut down after Mexican customs equipment failed and couldn’t process trucks.

The World Trade Bridge is the No. 1 land port on the U.S. border and the bridge only accepts commercial vehicles.

In 2023, there was $863 billion in trade between the United States and Mexico and 40% of all trade between both countries entered through Laredo, Texas.
