EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso Fire Department issued a critical safety advisory on Wednesday, March 13 on the dangers associated with the Rio Grande and the canals in El Paso.
The Fire Department has offered the following safety tips regarding the waterways. Those are the following:
Avoid canals: We strongly advise against any activities near the canals. The water currents are swift, and the depth can be deceptive. Stay away from the canals to prevent accidents and potential drowning incidents.
Heed warning signs: Respect all warning signs and barriers along the canals. These signs alert you to potential dangers, and disregarding them can lead to serious injury or death.
Do not attempt rescue: If you witness someone in distress, do not attempt to rescue yourself. Instead, immediately call 911 and provide precise information about the location and situation. Attempting a rescue without proper training and equipment can escalate the danger for both the victim and the rescuer.
Report hazards: If you notice any hazards or safety concerns around the canals, such as debris accumulation or damaged fencing, promptly report them to the U.S. Border Patrol at (915) 314-8194
Raise awareness: Help raise awareness about the risks associated with canals within your community. Educating others about these dangers can prevent accidents and save lives.
