EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A 21-year-old man from Honduras is facing assault charges after an incident involving migrants and the Texas National Guard on Thursday, March 21 near International Marker No. 36 at the US/Mexico border, the Texas Department of Public Safety said in a press release.
On Thursday morning, March 21, DPS was notified that a large group of migrants had breached the concertina wire near Gate 36, which is located between Midway and Fonseca Drive along the Border Highway, and that several migrants from the group had assaulted a service member, according to DPS.
DPS says that Junior Evaristo-Benitez, 21, of Honduras, was taken into custody and charged with assault on a public servant. He is now being held in the El Paso County Jail.
Additionally, the migrant group was made up of mostly men from Venezuela, according to DPS.
DPS says the wire fencing has now been repaired and law enforcement efforts in the area have been increased.
