KTSM News – National Park Service selected new Superintendent for Chamizal National Memorial

Posted on March 27, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The National Park Service has selected Gerardo Gonzalez to be the new Superintendent for the Chamizal National Memorial. He will begin his tenure on April 8.

The Chamizal park is a remembrance of the centuries-long diplomatic disputes between the United States and Mexico about the border boundary, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

“I am pleased to announce the selection of Gerardo as Chamizal National Monument Superintendent and welcome him to the NPS family. Gerado, a retired United States Army veteran, is an exemplary leader who values people, builds strong community relationships, and promotes teamwork,” said Deputy Regional Director Lance Hatten.

Gonzalez’s supervision doesn’t end here in El Paso, it also extends to oversee the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument in New Mexico, according to NPS.

“I am humbled and honored to be selected as the next Chamizal National Memorial superintendent. I have long admired the National Park Service mission of preserving our country’s natural and cultural resources and having the opportunity to lead a team of professionals completing that mission in my hometown of El Paso is beyond special. I look forward to working with the local community in celebrating our local heritage while reinforcing historical ties and forging new relationships,” said Gonzalez.
