El Paso Matters – The Week Ahead: Chalk the Block returns; County buys back guns

This is your Friday update, which takes a quick look at the week ahead and some developments that El Paso Matters is following. 

Chalk The Block Weekend: The 16th annual Chalk the Block festival runs from Friday to Sunday in the El Paso Downtown Arts District. The free event begins from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, continues from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and finishes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The festival features chalk artists, as well as musicians, muralists and arts and crafts vendors. Some of the major attractions include a mural walk, a moon garden, an audiovisual interactive station and the chalk drawing competition. For more information visit www.ChalkTheBlock.com. 

County Buys Back Guns Without Questions: El Paso County, in partnership with the El Paso County Attorney’s Office and the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, will conduct a “no questions asked” guns and rifles buy back program from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Ascarate Park, 6900 Delta Drive. In exchange for the guns, residents will receive prepaid gift cards ranging from $50 to $200 depending on the type and condition of the weapon. The county will pay $50 for non-functioning firearms; $100 for rifles and shotguns; $150 for handguns and $200 for assault rifles. There is a limit of 10 returned firearms per person. Nonfunctional firearms and ammunition also will be accepted, but ghost guns will not.The weapons turned in will be destroyed. Information: 915-546-2014.

Airport Parking Fee Increases: The daily fee to park in the short-term parking lot at the El Paso International Airport is increasing to $17 starting Monday. The City Council approved the new rate on Oct. 10. The $1 hourly rate for the short-term lot will remain unchanged. Also, the daily rate for the West Lot will remain at $10; and the daily rate for the long-term lot will stay at $7. For more information, please visit FlyELP.com.
