Posted on April 11, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The manhunt for the man accused of shooting and killing his wife in Mesilla is over.

Report: Man accused of fatally shooting wife apprehended in Juarez

Oscar Renee Sandoval, 59, who’s accused of fatally shooting his wife Sheireen AlJibury, 39, on Monday, April 1, is now in jail after being captured by Mexican authorities in Ciudad Juarez on Tuesday, April 9. He was subsequently extradited to U.S. Marshals the following day.

The Chihuahua State Government said in a statement that state law enforcement located Sandoval at approximately noon on Tuesday at the Vicente Guerrero and Venustiano Carranza crossing in Ciudad Juarez, where they were able to arrest him after he resisted arrest.

Sandoval was turned over to U.S. Marshal’s custody at the Santa Teresa Port of Entry at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, and was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with no bond later that afternoon, according to booking records.

The Mesilla Marshals Office confirmed the arrest at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 at a press conference at the Mesilla Town Hall.

“In conjunction with the United States Marshal Service, Oscar Rene Sandoval was taken into custody today at approximately 12:30 p.m. Due to the continued ongoing investigation, there are still limited details that can be shared at this time,” said Marshal Benjamin Azcarate.

Sandoval, who is facing first-degree murder charges had been on the run after allegedly shooting and killing his wife earlier this month.

The Mesilla Marshal’s Office has been leading the investigation with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, through which they were able to locate Sandoval’s abandoned vehicle in Sunland Park with a bullet hole in the passenger seat.

Through their investigation, they reportedly recovered casings near AlJibury’s body on Monday, April 1, the day of the murder. They also recovered a spent bullet days later after continued investigations.

Azcarate issued a clarification on the investigation at Wednesday’s press conference.

“The Mesilla Marshal’s Crime Scene team and detectives did not go back to the scene three days later. The crime scene team and detective worked the scene extensively since the night of April 1st, conducting a crime analysis, searches, diagrams, photography, aerial photography and search extensively for any other evidence,” said Azcarate.
