EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit (ACIU) Detective Kristopher Serna joined KTSM on Monday, April 15 as part of our “Mutt Mondays” series.
Serna talked about Animal Cruelty Prevention Month and how it’s important to view our pets as family.
“We got to get the mindset out that this is no longer just some type of animal we have in the backyard. We keep them in our homes, we keep them loved and sheltered as best we can,” Serna said.
The Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit was established in 2017 and consists of a team of seven, according to El Paso Animal Services.
The unit handles a variety of cases, including animal cruelty investigations, suspicions of animal fighting, bestiality cases, torturing, and poisoning.
Once an investigation is initiated, the process is transferred to the district’s office, and warrants may be issued as necessary, according to Animal Services.
“Punishments for offenders can range from state felony charges to Class A or Class B charges, depending on prior convictions and the severity of the case, potentially leading to prison time and hefty fines,” Animal Services said.
If anyone suspects animal-related concerns, they can call 311, and for emergencies, they can call 911
