El Paso Matters – Can Texans vote without identification?

Posted on April 18, 2024

NO.

Voters are required to show one of seven acceptable forms of photo identification at the polls, the Texas Election Code states.

They include a driver’s license, identification card, election identification certificate or handgun license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety; or a U.S. military ID, citizenship certificate or passport.

If voters are unable to bring or obtain an acceptable photo ID, they can fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration.

The form requires registered voters to state why they’re unable to obtain a photo ID. They must also show supporting forms of identification such as a current utility bill, bank statement, certified birth certificate, election certificate or other government document showing their name and address.

If a voter forgot their ID, they can fill out a provisional ballot but must present an acceptable form of identification at the county voter registrar’s office within six calendar days.

This fact brief is responsive to conversations such as this one.
