Border Report – GoFundMe fundraising platform now available in Mexico

Posted on May 1, 2024

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — GoFundMe has begun providing fundraising opportunities in Mexico, the 20th country supported by the California-based company.

It says the move into Mexico just last week will be a “powerful way to raise money for the people and causes they care about.”

In the past, fundraisers started in other countries provided money for causes and people in Mexico.

But finally, says Claudia Curiel, GoFundMe spokeswoman in Mexico, people south of the border can start their own fundraising campaigns, accept donations, and withdraw funds in Mexican Pesos.

Money exchange houses have become targets of extortion by cartels

“I’ll give you a recent example, in October when Hurricane Otis hit Acapulco, more than $1.5 million were raised to help those affected by the hurricane, so you can imagine how much more we could’ve been able to provide if we had supported Mexico at that time,” Curiel said.

She said there are only four requirements to start a fundraiser: You must be 18 years old, and you need a personal address in Mexico, a bank account in Mexico, and a federal registry taxpayer number.

Curiel stated that the GoFundMe website is fairly easy to navigate.

“There’s a pull-down menu at the bottom of the page where you can choose a language and a country, but, of course, if you’re in Mexico, it automatically directs you to the page for Mexico.”

She pointed out that with GoFundMe, it’s easy to make an impact in someone’s life.

“Even if you don’t have the funds to donate to a cause that you care about, you can always help by sharing a fundraiser, something we’ve seen about fundraisers that are shared at least six times within the first few hours tend to be a lot more successful.”

GoFundMe’s move into Mexico is the first expansion for the company in nearly six years.
