KTSM News – ‘Click It or Ticket’ urges everyone to buckle up

Posted on May 24, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) wants to remind motorists about the importance of wearing your seat belt.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign will be traveling throughout the state to urge Texas drivers to buckle up before hitting the road, according to the news release by TxDOT.

The campaign stopped by at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 24 at Upper Tom Lea Park, located at 900 Rim Rd.

According to 2023 data presented by TxDOT, 1,183 people who were not wearing seat belts died in crashes in Texas. Wearing seat belts can reduce the risk of dying in a crash by up to 60 percent, according to TxDOT.

According to TxDOT, Texas police will step up the enforcement of the seat belt law from May 20 through June 2, including Memorial Day weekend. Individuals can face fines and court costs of up to $200 of not having their seat belts on.

Children younger than 8 years old must be in a safety seat or booster seat until they are taller than 4 feet, 9 inches, according to TxDOT. If the child or children are not properly buckled, drivers can face fines of up to $250 plus court costs.
