KTSM News – Mayor of El Paso invited to White House for Biden’s immigration announcement

Posted on June 3, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — The White House has invited El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser to join President Joe Biden’s signing of an executive order on immigration, the city of El Paso told Border Report.

Leeser is one of at least three other Texas border mayors who have agreed to attend the immigration announcement on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.

According to the Associated Press, the White House has been finalizing an executive order that would, among other things, shut down the border after the asylum requests reached a certain number for the day.

The AP also reported that Brownsville Mayor John Cowen and Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza both confirmed the White House invited them, and that the mayor from McAllen said he was invited but could not attend because of a prior commitment.

In a statement to Border Report, Leeser said he looks forward to hearing more about the President’s plan on Tuesday, but added that Congress must fix a “broken immigration system.”

“El Paso is a welcoming community, and that makes me very proud, but no community can continue the effort and resources we’ve expended on this humanitarian crisis endlessly,” Leeser said. “We are appreciative of the funding we have received from the federal government so that our efforts don’t fall on the backs of El Paso taxpayers, but our immigration system is broken, and it is critical that Congress work on a bipartisan long-term plan to work with other countries in order to create a more manageable, humane, and sustainable immigration system for our country.”

Leeser said the city of El Paso stands ready to work with partners at the local, state and federal level on this effort.
