KTSM News – New Mexicans head to polls for primary election

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Tuesday, June 4 is Election Day in Doña Ana County with the New Mexico Primary.

Polling stations will be open be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 42 locations around Doña Ana County. A full list of voting centers can be found by clicking here.

During the early voting period, which ended on Saturday, 5,501 early ballots were cast and 1,972 absentee ballots were cast.

As of Monday, June 3, 7.9 percent of eligible voters have cast their ballot in Doña Ana County.

The top race appears to be for district attorney in the 3rd Judicial District, which covers Doña Ana County. Democratic incumbent Gerald Byers is facing three challengers for his party’s nomination – former County Manager Fernando Macias; Ramona J. Martinez; and Shaharazad Booth.

The winner will face Republican Michael Caine, who is running unopposed in the Republican side of the primary.

There are two contested Democratic primaries for state representative in Doña Ana County.

In District 35, incumbent Angelica Rubio is facing challenger Gabriel Duran Jr. There is no Republican in that race.

In District 53, incumbent Willie D. Madrid is facing Jon Hill. The winner will face Republican Elizabeth Lee Winterrowd in the fall.

County Clerk Amanda Lopez Askin is being challenged in the Democratic Primary by Andrew J. Ostic. The winner will face Republican Cheryl De Young in the fall. De Young is running unopposed.
