EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Sun City Cats, a trap-neuter-return (TNR) advocacy group in El Paso, is currently paying rent on an apartment that houses over 20 cats after their owner had to leave El Paso.
Sun City Cats volunteer Lindsey Alvarez says Sister Maria, a nun, lived at the apartment with her cats but had to retire.
Sister Maria was moved to a retirement home across the country and had to leave her cats behind, according to Sun City Cats.
Alvarez says the El Paso community reached out to the advocacy group to see if rehoming the cats was possible.
“We’re not a rescue. We’re a TNR group but the community reached out to us so we’re trying to help, trying to rehome some of these cats,” Alvarez said.
The community has since come forward and adopted some of the cats. Others were sent to sanctuaries.
Alvarez also says team members from the advocacy group have donated money to keep the apartment.
Volunteers are currently taking care of the cats which includes feeding them, watching them and cleaning the residence.
Alvarez says they’re hoping the community can help adopt the rest of the cats.
“They’re indoor cats. They’re a little shy right now, but they can become your forever friend,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez says the advocacy group will try to help the cats as long as they can, but time is running out.
“If they can’t adopt, we would hope that maybe they would donate some food, litter, beds, toys,” Alvarez said.
