Border Report – Woman pulled from Rio Grande dies

Posted on June 12, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — A woman in her 20s drowned in the Rio Grande on Wednesday, the Sunland Park Fire Department said.

Fire officials say U.S. Border Patrol agents pulled the woman from the river about 6:30 a.m. in West El Paso. Crews performed CPR, but the woman did not survive.

It happened near the iconic power station on Doniphan Drive.

No other details about the woman have been made available.

Several people have died in the El Paso Sector, which includes all of New Mexico, in recent weeks, including people who fell ill due to extreme heat or drowned in the river. Officials have confirmed that many of the victims are migrants who entered the country illegally.

On Monday, Sunland Park crews found a body in the desert off of the Pete Domenici Highway and New Mexico Highway 9.

Border Patrol officials told Border Report that as of Wednesday, the agency’s El Paso Sector had recorded 671 rescues and 75 deaths this fiscal year, which started on Oct. 1. A Border Patrol spokesman also noted that the death toll might not include some of the most recent events until investigations are completed.

Border Report also reached out to Sunland Park Fire Department to inquire about Monday’s drowning and is awaiting a response.
