KTSM News – Flash Flood watch for Ruidoso; Heavy rain threat for El Paso — Your 9-Day Forecast

Posted on June 20, 2024

The winds were horrible last night, gusting to over 60 mph on the west side, and unfortunately those winds will be gusty again overnight. The first surge of tropical moisture arrived today with cloudy skies and a high of only 90 (it was 106 yesterday). The moisture INCREASES Friday, so we remain under the threat of heavy rainfall overnight and through Friday. It’s a bit ironic that summer officially began at 2:51 PM this afternoon just as the clouds gave us the coolest day we’ve had in a while.

Ruidoso is under a Flash Flood Watch through Friday in anticipation of storms that could produce heavy rainfall.

TONIGHT:  KTSM has issued a Weather Authority Alert for the threat of heavy rainfall Thursday night through Friday.  The skies will be mostly cloudy to overcast with widely scattered showers and t-showers likely.  Heavy tropical moisture and instability raise the possibility of heavy rainfall if storms get started.  It would be a “domino effect” of showers, so we must be ready.  The east winds will range from 15-35 mph with the strongest gusts on the east slopes, and the low will drop to 72.

FORECAST:   Friday will be mostly cloudy to overcast with scattered showers and the threat of heavy rainfall.  A few wave disturbances will combine with the heavy tropical moisture to enhance the chance of storms.  The east winds will range from 10-25 mph, and the high will be 89.  Saturday will start out with mostly cloudy skies but turn mostly sunny and hot by afternoon.  Saturday’s high: 101.  Sunday will be mostly sunny and even hotter with a high of 104.  Extreme heat returns to the Borderland starting Monday.  Monday will be partly cloudy with a very slight storm chance and a high of 105.  Tuesday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of isolated storms and a high of 106.  Wednesday should be the hottest day as high pressure reaches its maximum.  Wednesday will be partly cloudy with a chance of late day storms and a high of 108.
