EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The large recycling plant fire in South-Central El Paso in late May started in some piles of cardboard located on the east side of the facility’s rear building, according to a fire report released to KTSM.
The fire on May 28 at the recycling plant at 1611 East Paisano and Coles burned for 25 hours and 200 firefighters responded to the blaze.
After a thorough investigation, fire marshals were unable to determine the cause of the May 28 fire.
A previous fire at the recycling plant in November 2023 was classified as “intentional.”
KTSM has also obtained records showing there have been 14 fire calls at the same facility in the last five years.
Four of those are related to the May 28 fire and rekindling of material at the plant.
City Council members unanimously voted to approve a multi-agency task force to address public health and environmental concerns brought forth by residents in the neighborhood during the June 11 City Council meeting.
El Paso fire Chief Jonathan Killings is requesting 120 days to appropriately coordinate a decision on proposed remediation recommendations for the recycling plant site.
