El Paso Matters – El Paso had record heat in June. Again.

Posted on July 1, 2024

El Paso set a record for its hottest June ever, smashing a mark that had stood for 30 years.

The average temperature this June was 89.4, surpassing the mark of 88.9 set in 1994. In addition to being the hottest June in weather records dating to 1887, it also was the second hottest month ever in those records. Only July 2023 was hotter.

The June heat was the latest example of the impacts of climate change and the urban heat island effect on El Paso. The summer of 1994 was freakishly hot by El Paso’s standards at the time, but most of the records set that year have been eclipsed.

El Paso’s two hottest months on record have occurred in the last 11 months. Eight of the 10 hottest months on record have occurred in the past decade.

June saw 21 days of 100 degrees or more. That’s the third-most triple-digit June days, behind 23 in 1994 and 25  in 1980.

El Paso had 12 days when temperatures reached at least 105. That’s one more day of 105+ in a month than El Paso saw between 1900 and 1939 combined.

The average daily high temperature in June was 102.5, more than 5 degrees above the 30-year average between 1991 and 2020.

The other major component of June’s record heat was extremely warm nights. On nine of June’s 30 days, the low temperature did not fall below 80 degrees. The 30-year average overnight low in June is 70.6 degrees. This June, the average low temperature was 76.2.
