EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man is facing a charge of human smuggling causing death after a pursuit led to a deadly crash last week in East El Paso, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
DPS says Eduardo Gonzalez Garcia, 22, from Chihuahua, Mexico, is facing the charge after one of the migrants he was smuggling died in the crash.
At around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2, Garcia along with a female passenger, and four migrants were traveling in a Camaro.
Officials were notified that the Camaro was involved in human smuggling and the vehicle was also observed speeding.
A DPS trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop, and Garcia stopped in front of Basset Place mall before evading, according to DPS.
After evading, Garcia crashed into a Ford pickup truck at the intersection of Gateway West Boulevard and Airway Boulevard, according to DPS.
The impact of the crash caused the pickup truck to strike another vehicle in the area, and the driver and the passenger of the pickup truck were transported to a local hospital.
Gonzalez along with the female passenger and the four migrants were transported to local hospitals and were then turned over to Border Patrol. One of the migrants died, DPS said.
