EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) and the New Mexico State Police have completed a joint project that targeted “hot spots” for burglaries, auto burglaries and motor thefts, according to the LCPD in a news release.
From Monday, April 29 through Tuesday, June 18, the joint operation resulted in 22 field interviews, 26 business contacts, 3 DWI arrests, 12 misdemeanor arrests, 3 felony arrests and 101 citations in connection to property crime, LCPD said.
“We’re appreciative of the working relationship we have with our counterparts at New Mexico State Police and other law enforcement agencies that serve our community,” said Las Cruces Police Department Chief Jeremy Story. “These joint operations produce results that are a testimony to the dedicated professionals who work them. We look forward to continuing a strong working relationship with our law enforcement partners and with members of our community.”
LCPD said the partnership saw the following four property crime categories decreased through May 2024:
Residential burglaries – 28 percent
Commercial burglaries – 9 percent
Non-residential burglaries – 44 percent
Vehicle thefts – 18 percent
Both agencies are continuing the partnership on a new project to address violent crime, LCPD said. The violent crime project will run from July to September and will target hot spots for aggravated assaults within Las Cruces city limits.
LCPD said so far through May 31, aggravated assaults have increased 64 percent from 2023.
LCPD are encouraging residents to report any suspected criminal activity immediately by calling (575) 526-0795. If the criminal activity is believed to be an emergency, call 911.
