EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A growing number of congressional Democrats are publicly calling on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, but El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar isn’t one of them.
On Friday, July 12, Rep. Mike Levin, D-Calif., became the 19th congressional Democrat to go on record saying President Biden should step aside. This following last month’s debate and Thursday’s much-anticipated news conference at the NATO summit in Washington, where Biden mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump” in the opening question. He also introduced Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as “President Putin” earlier in the day at the summit.
Despite facing pressure from fellow Democrats to drop out of the race, Escobar — one of Biden’s seven campaign co-chairs — has recently taken to social media to show her support for the President.
“I’m damn proud to be #RidingWithBidenHarris2024,” said Escobar in a post to X on Thursday, July 11.
“I remain as committed as ever to electing the man who enacted historic investment in: climate change, infrastructure, manufacturing and innovation here in the U.S. and who will continue to fight like hell to restore the freedoms Republicans have taken from us,” added Escobar in a post to X earlier this month.
As he has throughout the week, Biden rejected any suggestion that he should or would drop out of the race, insisting there is no one more capable of beating former President Donald Trump in November than him.
Biden did, however, concede that he would consider exiting the race if his team concluded there was “no way” he could win.
According to NBC News, Democrats chose Biden as their nominee four years ago because they thought he was the most electable. Now, the party is threatening to ditch the president because they are convinced he can’t win again and may take the rest of the party down with him. NBC News reported the Biden Campaign is quietly polling how Harris would fare against Trump if she were at the top of the ticket.
President Biden was back on the campaign trail Friday with a trip to Detroit.
