SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, is scheduled to tour the border between San Diego and Tijuana Thursday evening.
He will be escorted on the visit by U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California.
They plan to see an area called “Whiskey 8” where migrants tend to cross the border and congregate about 2 miles west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Through June of the current fiscal year, 1,362,256 migrant encounters have been recorded along the southern border. The San Diego Sector has seen 280,953 of those encounters.
It’s been the second-busiest sector behind Tucson.
For the month of May, it recorded 32,504 encounters, but in June, they decreased to 25,610.
Numbers for July have not been released yet.
As a way to decrease the number of people crossing the border, on June 4, President Biden issued an executive order limiting the number of migrants who could enter the U.S. to seek asylum.
The mandate forces the border be closed to new arrivals seeking asylum once encounters at the border averaged 2,500 per day over the course of one week.
The border will reopen once crossings fall below an average of 1,500 individuals per day for a seven-day period.
During his visit, Johnson will also tour U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and Imperial Beach Border Patrol Station.
