EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — State Sen. Cesar J. Blanco, D-El Paso, and his staff distributed 650 backpacks to students in the Tornillo Independent School District on Saturday, July 27.
Saturday’s giveaway was the second of a three-part giveaway at schools across Blanco’s Senate District 29.
Different schools are selected for assistance each year based on the Texas Education Agency’s Economically Disadvantaged Status Reports, according to Blanco’s office.
These giveaways are held only for those enrolled and registered at the selected schools.
Blanco issued the following statement:
“With many families facing tough financial choices during the back-to-school season, I’m happy we can help ease this burden by providing students with free backpacks.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than witnessing the joy on students’ faces as they receive their new backpacks. Every student in our community deserves the opportunity to start the school year with the confidence to dream bigger, work harder, and achieve more!
“I want to thank our community and corporate partners who have made this event possible. Together, we are investing in the future success of so many young learners!”
