EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 19-year-old man was arrested after fleeing in a woman’s car that was left unattended Monday morning, July 29, in a Northeast El Paso neighborhood, El Paso Police say.
Police say Andrew Gabriel Hernandez, 19, was charged with theft of property and evading arrest or detention with a vehicle after a 38-year-old woman left her keys in a vehicle and left the driver’s door open in a neighborhood in Northeast El Paso.
Just after 9 a.m. that Monday, the 38-year-old woman had just arrived at her residence located at the 11100 block of IIan Ramon Place and parked in the driveway.
The woman then reportedly left her keys in the vehicle and the driver’s door open as she walked towards her front door.
Police say that’s when Hernandez entered the vehicle and drove away. The woman then flagged down a motorist who was passing by, who turned out to be an undercover police officer.
Officers then attempted a traffic stop at Fairbanks Drive and McCombs Street once Hernandez was spotted. However, he then fled from officers in the stolen vehicle, according to police.
Hernandez ended up losing control of the vehicle on Loop 375 and crashed into the center median which caused the vehicle to come to a stop.
Hernandez was then taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a total bond of $35,000.
During the short pursuit, officers requested air support from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
