El Paso Matters – El Paso events: La Nube opens, El Fresco series concludes

Posted on August 7, 2024

Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

La Nube Opens Saturday

La Nube, a $72 million STEAM discovery center in Downtown El Paso, will open its doors Saturday, Aug. 10. The center represents the culmination of a 12-year journey that began with voter approval of a quality of life bond in 2012. Designed by the architectural firm Snøhetta, La Nube — Spanish for the cloud — offers a unique blend of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics in a space designed for visitors of all ages. Located at 201 W. Main Drive, across from Southwest University Park, La Nube features nine immersive zones filled with interactive exhibits, such as the Anything’s Possible Climber and Fly High. Tickets can be purchased in advance on La Nube’s website. Information: la-nube.org.

El Fresco Music Series Concludes

The El Fresco Music Series concludes its 2024 season Friday, Aug. 9, with its Rock Night event at the El Paso Convention Center, 1 Civic Center Plaza. The free, monthly summer music series — formerly known as Alfresco! Fridays — returned this year to Downtown El Paso. Each month showcased a diverse array of talent. This week’s concluding concert is scheduled from 7 to 10 p.m. and will feature performances from the Mixx band and El Paso Windy City. Information: El Paso Live.

Woofstock Pet Adoption Event

The city of El Paso Animal Services is hosting Woofstock, the organization’s inaugural event at its new Westside Adoption Center, from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at 5625 Confetti Drive. The event will feature free dog adoptions as part of the Clear the Shelters Campaign, ensuring attendees can take a new pet home. In addition to adoptions, the event offers free pet microchips and discounted vaccines for dogs and cats. Guests can enjoy food, games and various vendors, while live music will be furnished by Fargo, DJ Mezza, DJ Izzy R, and Des Cotae. Information: ElPasoAnimalServices.org.

Zapateados at the Plaza Theatre

Zapateados, a full-length dance production inspired by Viva El Paso!, returns to the Plaza Theatre this weekend for a two-day run — 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11. This production, presented by Eden Performing Arts and directed by Hector Serrano with choreography by Enrique Avila, features an array of performances, including a pre-Hispanic ritual, flamenco, Mexican folklórico, a Western hoedown and cancan. The emphasis of the show is on the footwork — zapateado — that defines each dance style. Tickets and information: Plaza Theatre box office or 915-231-1100.

Other El Paso Events

Back-To-School Expo: Cielo Vista Mall will be the site of a Back-To-School Expo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10. The event, hosted by the mall and Townsquare Media, will feature dozens of local vendors, live entertainment, exhibitions, and two fashion shows by Laura’s Productions at 1 and 4 p.m. in the Dillard’s court. Students can participate in a mascot challenge hosted by GECU at 2 p.m. and have the chance to win one of four $500 scholarships courtesy of El Paso Electric. The event coincides with the tax-free weekend Aug. 9-11. Information: simonteam@dpwpr.com.

Back to School Bash: The PBS Back to School Bash invites families for a day of fun from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at The Outlet Shoppes at El Paso, 7051 South Desert Blvd. The free, all-ages event features live music, appearances by beloved PBS characters, free school supplies and a variety of vendor booths.
