EL PASO, Texas (KTSM)—HOME, a developer of affordable housing in Texas, has been awarded $16 million to help fund the South Mesa Hills Development project.
The $16 million is a nine percent tax credit by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA), according to a news release sent by HOME.
The South Mesa Hills Development project will include a 104-unit apartment complex that will help provide high-quality and affordable housing in the community, according to HOME.
“HOME understands the critical need for more affordable housing options in El Paso. The Mesa Hills Development is a testament to our commitment to meeting this need. With $16 million in tax credits and an additional $7 million in funding, we can create a thriving community that supports working families, older people, and veterans. Importantly, this project does not utilize taxpayer money, showcasing our dedication to responsible and impactful development,” said Gerald Cichon, CEO of HOME.
Residents in the Coronado and Mesa Hills area have filled out a petition with over 600 signatures to vote against the affordable housing development.
As we’ve previously reported, residents said they felt there was not transparency with District 8 Rep. Chris Canales.
West El Paso residents are also calling for the removal of City Rep. Canales by filling a petition to City Hall on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
