EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) is highlighting a student who is one of the highest scholarship recipients from the El Paso region.
Athenas Delgado, 18, is a recent graduate from EPISD’s College Career Technology Academy (CCTA) and is pursuing a law degree at the University of Texas at Austin, according to EPISD in a news release.
With the EPISD Education Foundation Scholarship, Delgado has totaled over $1.6 million in scholarships, according to EPISD.
Delgado overcame at one time dropping out to becoming one of the highest scholarship recipients in the region, EPISD said.
Reflecting on her transformative experience at CCTA, Delgado said: “I appreciated the chance to re-enter school because after dropping out of high school, I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma. CCTA gave me that second chance, and I’m very grateful.”
Delgado dropped out of high school during the COVID-19 pandemic and only completed her freshman year online. She enrolled into CCTA during the summer and dedicated herself to her students, according to EPISD.
“I considered getting my G.E.D. and going to a local university, but then I thought, ‘What if I want to go to college elsewhere?’ So, I decided to pursue my diploma because if others could do it, then I could too,” Delgado said.
“Athenas Delgado exemplifies the resilience and determination that we strive to instill in all our students. Her journey is truly inspiring to not only her El Paso ISD student peers but students across the region. We are incredibly proud of her and all that she has accomplished,” said EPISD Superintendent Diana Sayavedra.
