KTSM News – Animal cruelty big in El Paso, nonprofit works closely with EPPD

Posted on August 15, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Law N Paws Animal Rescue Volunteer Heather Boyle says animal cruelty is big in El Paso, with abandonment and abuse being the most common at their rescue shelter.

Law N Paws, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2017 by El Paso Police Detective Vanessa Acosta, who works closely with EPPD’s animal cruelty unit.

Boyle says Law N Paws receives animals from El Paso Animal Services who need more medical attention and dogs who have been abandoned or were victims of animal cruelty.

“Sadly, it is a big thing here in El Paso. I’ve lived in other cities like Austin and things like that and for some reason here in El Paso it’s a big thing,” Boyle said.

Boyle says backyard breeding is also a major problem in El Paso with most people being irresponsible with taking the appropriate measures.

“They’re just not responsible of taking the right measures of getting them AKC registered and you know we’re going to have this many litters and here, they almost turn it into like a puppy mill, you know they have two cute dogs, they breed them and sell off the puppies,” Boyle said.

Laws N Paws is a nonprofit organization that works off of donations, grants, and local donors within El Paso.

“We’re always accepting donations. Whether that be monetary donations or b lankest, food, or kennels. Anything like that. Things to keep the dogs active so like even bones or chew stuff,” Boyle said.

The nonprofit helps with an animal’s rehabilitation along with any medical needs they may need. Most of the dogs are also adoptable/fosterable.

“We do have a few dogs that probably won’t get adopted ever but the majority of them are adoptable and they’re amazing dogs. They have so much love,” Boyle said.

The non-profit has received hundreds of animals since 2017 and their primary shelter is currently at capacity with 86 dogs. Boyle adds that they’re also a no-kill shelter.

The nonprofit currently has two shelters with their main facility located in far East El Paso.

The nonprofit is also working on building a new facility that will be bigger and will be able to hold more animals. Boyle says the shelter will be ready within a year.

Boyle also says they use social media to promote the dogs they currently have in order for them to get adopted. They also do on-site adoptions at Petco and PetSmart with that information also being posted online.

Boyle says the nonprofit does outreaches at schools and posts on their social media to try end educate the public on animal cruelty.
