EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The Sunland Park Police Department is warning residents of a possible scam operation involving a water service company asking for “sensitive and private information,” the department announced in a press release Friday, Aug. 16 via Facebook.
This week, Sunland Park PD responded to a “suspicious circumstances” call regarding a possible scam operation.
Officers learned a Sunland Park resident had found a letter on their door from a water service company that stated this was their second notice and to call the number on the card, according to the press release.

Sunland Park PD said the resident called the number and set an appointment. Later, an unidentified man arrived wearing an orange vest with what appeared to be a Home Depot name card displayed.
The man stated he was there to test the resident’s water and during this encounter, the man requested the victim’s Social Security number and state-issued ID card information.
Responding officers contacted the number provided, (575) 537-1627, and after a few questions officers were hung up on, according to Sunland Park PD.
Prior to contacting law enforcement, the victim said contact was made on their end with Home Depot in El Paso and was informed by Home Depot officials they do not send out employees in this manner.
“Sunland Park Police Department would like to remind residents that no government agency, water/utility company or reputable private company will have field workers request sensitive and private information such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license, state issued identification, or passport information,” read the press release.
Sunland Park PD said if this situation presents itself, contact central dispatch at (575) 526-0795 and to not provide any sensitive or private information to anyone.
In addition, Sunland Park PD is asking the public for assistance in identifying man in the following photo:
