EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Nearly 140 propspective doctors will go through a rite of passage at Texas Tech Health El paso this weekend.
One hundred and thirty-five incoming medical students will be going through the 16th annual Foster School of Medicine White Coat ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 17.
The white coat “symbolizes the cloak of compassion, reminding each student of the importance of compassionate, collaborative and scientifically excellent patient care during their careers,” according to a Texas Tech news release.
The White Coat ceremony will be 9 a.m. Saturday at the Starlight Event Center, 6650 Continental Dr.
The class of 2028, with 135 students, is the largest since the medical school was founded, according to Texas Tech.
The Foster School of Medicine’s first white coat ceremony took place on Aug. 1, 2009, shortly after the school admitted its inaugural class. Four years later, on May 18, 2013, the school became part of the newly established Texas Tech Health El Paso.
Texas Tech Health El Paso has graduated over 2,400 doctors, nurses and researchers over the past decade, and will add dentists to its alumni beginning in 2025, Texas Tech said.
