Posted on August 18, 2024

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was taken to the hospital Friday after he reportedly got part of his arm stuck in a tortilla machine in Logan Heights, authorities said.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department received a call from the 400 block of South 30th Street about the incident shortly after 10 a.m. Friday. The department’s incident webpage showed the exact address of the incident belonged to Sawaya Brothers Market.

According to the caller, the man had gotten his arm stuck specifically in the part of the tortilla machine that grinds up the masa, or corn dough, SDFD said. They said the patient’s arm was in the machine up to the shoulder.

The department said crews arrived and monitored the patient while they waited for other resources to help extricate him. At least 33 personnel responded to the incident, per the department’s webpage, along with crews from National City.

After further evaluation, crews disassembled the tortilla machine and were able to free most of the man’s arm, around 10:58 a.m., SDFD said.

“There was still a portion of machinery that had the patient’s arm and they could fit in the ambulance,” a department spokesperson told FOX 5/KUSI in a statement.

The patient was transported to UC San Diego’s Hillcrest location. Officials said no one else was hurt.
