KTSM News – City to host community meetings about Downtown arena ballot measure

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The City of El Paso is inviting the public to a series of community meetings to inform voters about a November ballot measure that will determine the future of the so-called Downtown arena project.

According to the news release by the City, City Council approved an ordinance on July 30 to have the Multipurpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Facility, also known as the Downtown Arena, to be on the upcoming Nov. 5 general election.

The Downtown Arena ballot measure will be asking voters to decide the future of the City’s authority to utilize the remaining $128,455,636 in general obligation bonds to build the arena, according to the City.

The in-person meetings will take place at the following dates and times:

Wednesday, Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Westside Regional Command, located at 4801 Osborne Dr.

Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m.

Marty Robbins Recreation Center, located at 11620 Vista Del Sol Dr.

Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.

The Beast Urban Park, located at 13501 Jason Crandall Dr.

Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Westside Branch Library, located at 125 Belvidere St.

Monday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Valle Bajo Community Center, located at 7380 Alameda Ave.

Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 5:30 p.m.

Hilos de Plata, located at 4451 Delta Dr.

Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m.

Municipal Services Center, located at 1059 Lafayette Dr.

Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.

Northgate Transit Center at Metro 31, located at 9348 Dyer St.

A hybrid meeting will also be available at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5. The public can attend one of three ways:

According to the City, the ballot measure for the Downtown Arena will read as such:

“To cancel the City’s authority to issue the remaining $128,455,636 in general obligation bonds for the Multipurpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Facility to be located in Downtown El Paso which was approved by the voters in the City’s November 6, 2012 election, resulting in the revocation of the bonds?”
