Here’s a roundup of some culture and civic events in the borderland in the coming week.

El Paso Matters Book Club Meetup

Author and playwright Daniel Chacón will discuss his latest book, “Retablos: Stories from a Life Lived Along the Border,” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Valle Bajo Community Center and Library, 7380 Alameda Ave. Solis will discuss his memoir, which captures the essence of growing up in El Paso through vivid narratives steeped in border life and tradition. The event will feature a moderated discussion followed by a live Q&A session. This free event is open to the public. Registration is encouraged. Information: El Paso Matters Book Club.

UTEP Night at the Chihuahuas

The University of Texas at El Paso invites the El Paso community to help turn Southwest University Park into a sea of orange for the annual UTEP Night at the Chihuahuas at 6:35 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30. The El Paso Chihuahuas host the Tacoma Rainiers during an evening that will feature performances from the UTEP marching band, cheerleaders and dance team. The UTEP Choir will open the night with the national anthem and UTEP President Wilson will throw the ceremonial first pitch. The first 1,000 attendees will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a limited edition Chihuahuas-themed UTEP bucket hat will be available for purchase. Information and tickets: utep.edu

Arena Bond Revocation Community Meetings

A pair of community meetings that are next in part of a series of nine gatherings aimed at educating voters on the upcoming arena bond revocation ballot measure are scheduled this week on the Far Eastside. The first begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Marty Robbins Recreation Center, 11620 Vista Del Sol Drive. The second meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at The Beast Urban Park, 13501 Jason Crandall Drive. The initiative, organized by the city of El Paso, informs residents about the Nov. 5 ballot measure, which will determine whether to cancel the city’s authority to issue the remaining $128 million in bonds for the Downtown arena that was originally approved by voters in 2012. Additional meetings are scheduled throughout September. Information: elpasotexas.gov

Unique Exhibit Unveiled at El Paso Airport

The city of El Paso and the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso will unveil a new cultural exhibit, “El Imperio Ancestral Del Xoloitzcuintle,” at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at El Paso International Airport, 6701 Convair Road. The exhibit, presented by Kalpixki-Art, includes 31 painted fiberglass sculptures of the Xoloitzcuintle, a dog breed rooted in Mexican heritage. The artwork, which was created by 23 artists from Ciudad Juárez and Guadalajara, has previously been on display at the Museum of the Revolution on the Border in Juárez as well as the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso near Downtown. The exhibit will be on display in the airport’s main concourse through Nov. 1.

Opening Reception at Magoffin Home

The Magoffin Home invites history enthusiasts to the opening reception of “The Military Odyssey of General William J. Glasgow” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Magoffin Home courtyard, 1120 Magoffin Ave. The exhibit, crafted by Casa Magoffin Compañeros board member Joseph Longo, delves into the military legacies of the Magoffin and Glasgow families, who played roles in conflicts spanning from the Mexican-American War to the Cold War. The event will feature a brief lecture by historian Sharon Cowell and light refreshments. This exhibit offers a glimpse into the career of Brig. Gen. William J. Glasgow, who served in four military campaigns and was the oldest living West Point graduate until his death at 101. Information: Texas Historical Commission.

International Boundary and Water Commission Exhibit

An opening reception for an exhibit marking the 135th anniversary of the establishment of the International Boundary and Water Commission is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso, 910 East San Antonio Ave. This free exhibition will showcase historical materials including maps, documents, technical equipment, books and photographs that trace the evolution of international boundaries and binational hydraulic projects between Mexico and the United States. The event offers an opportunity to explore the IBWC’s vital role in managing shared water resources over the years. The binational body was created in 1889 to apply the rules for determining the location of international boundaries when rivers transferred tracts of land from one bank to the other.
