EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — With a strategic location less than 200 miles from El Paso and near the town of Truth or Consequences, Elephant Butte is poised for a significant transformation. Under a new plan, officials are embarking on a multi-million-dollar makeover, aiming to not only enhance the appeal of the lake but also to stimulate growth in the surrounding businesses.
It all starts with Turtleback Mountain Resort, a once-struggling resort that is now getting new amenities thanks to new investors.
There are $67 million worth of projects going on in town right now, including improvements and expansion of sewer and water, new street repaving, and just making it a really good place to visit, explained Phillip Mortensen, Truth or Consequences mayor.
“We’re breaking ground on phase one of the vertical amenities. So pickleball courts, dog runs, picnic areas, fitness areas, playgrounds for kids and grandkids, and misting stations. And then, in four months, we’ll be going vertical on the pool, fitness center, spa, and tranquility garden. So, it’s a big day for us,” James Prendamano, real estate developer, said.
These amenities are not just about revamping the resort, but also about fostering a sense of community. The idea is to attract more than just guests-it’s about inviting more permanent visitors, with new houses being built near the resort, creating a vibrant and inclusive community.
The project will be completed in three phases. Phase One will focus on creating recreational amenities, Phase Two will introduce wellness and leisure facilities, and Phase Three will add more community features and security measures.
