KTSM News – PD: Woman kills passenger after running red light in East Central El Paso

Posted on September 4, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 26-year-old El Paso woman is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter after allegedly running the red light and killing her passenger back in April in East Central El Paso, according to El Paso Police.

Police say Elizabeth Olivia Chagra-Nichols, 26, and her passenger Derek Omar Limon Sparks, 26, were traveling southbound in a KIA Forte at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, April 14, on the 5800 block of Paisano.

At the same time, a 50-year-old woman was traveling westbound in an Oldsmobile on the 5700 block of Trowbridge.

Police say Chagra-Nichols ran the red light at the intersection, causing a collision. All occupants were then transported to a local hospital.

On April 20, Sparks passed away from the injuries he sustained in the crash and the Medical Examiner’s Office contacted investigators.

On August 23, Chagra-Nichols was taken into custody and was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault after the investigation revealed she had run the red light, according to El Paso Police.

Chagra-Nichols was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a total bond of $150,000.
