McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials say they seized $701,000 in illegal drugs during the search of one van at an international bridge in Eagle Pass, Texas.

Sunday’s drug discovery at the Camino Real International Bridge occurred after CBP officers sent a older model Chevrolet van to a secondary inspection after it crossed from Piedras Negras, Mexico. The car was put through non-intrusive inspection equipment, which can see through the floorboards and into hidden compartments of vehicles.

Officers found 31 packages totaling almost 70 pounds of drugs believed to be methamphetamine. They also found a 2.6-pound package believed to be heroin within the walls of three food ovens that were located on the roof rack of the van, CBP said Wednesday.

“Our frontline officers continue to maintain resolute vigilance and that dedication to the mission coupled with an effective use of technology resulted in the interception of a significant amount of narcotics,” Eagle Pass Port Director Pete Beattie said in a statement.
