KTSM News – UTEP volleyball to host ‘Borderland Invitational,’ for home opener

Posted on September 4, 2024

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – UTEP volleyball will host the Borderland Invitational September 5th through 7th to open up the Miners season at home.

UTEP in addition to Southeastern Louisiana, Air Force Academy and Stephen F. Austin will play in a round robin styled invitiational throughout the three days of competition.

The Miners are coming off of its first in season matches of the year collecting one loss and to wins over the weekend at the Utah Classic. Both wins were a 3-set sweep over its competitors. The team hopes to carry this response and momentum into this weekend at Memorial Gym.

“Our team really loves to play at home and our city really loves to cheer on our team here at home,” head coach Ben Wallis said. “It’s the funny running joke these days that it’s called ‘Club Memorial.’ But it really it’s like a club environment where you want to come and enjoy the entertainment. So, our team loves to play here. They get really excited to do it and they go show the city what we’re made of. I need the city to get ready because this is a good team and we’re going to really prove that this week.”

Players to look out for during the Miners home opener will be middle Kaya Weaver who broke program records over the weekend with 12 total blocks and 10 block assists in the Miners match against Utah State on Sunday. Weaver also earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Utah Classic after her performance.

UTEP’s first match of the invitational is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., against Southland Conference Champions Southeastern Louisiana.
