EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Two national award-winning authors will be the first participants in New Mexico State University’s 2024-25 Nelson Boswell Reader Series this fall semester, organizers said.
Authors Karen Brennan and Joni Wallace will read from their books beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the CMI Theatre, Milton Hall 171, at NMSU, as part of the reader series.
The event is free and open to anyone.
A reception will follow the readings at Bosque Brewing Company, 901 E. University Ave., directly across University Avenue from the ASNMSU Center for the Arts.
Brennan is the author of nine books, which include poetry, fiction and nonfiction. A recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts fellowship and an Association of Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) award, Brennan is professor emerita of English and creative writing at the University of Utah.
Her stories, poems and essays have been widely published in journals and magazines and have appeared in many anthologies. Since 1991, she has served as core faculty for The Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers based at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina.
Wallace’s poetry and multi-media (sound and video) works have appeared in many journals, and her documentary poetry collection has been anthologized in “Privacy Policy, The Poetry of Surveillance,” and has been featured by the Scottish Poetry Library and the Poetry Society of America. Her honors include Four Way Books’ Levis Prize for her collection, “Blinking Ephemeral Valentine,” and fellowships from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Baltic Writing Residency. Wallace’s most recent collection is “Landscape with Missing River,” which follows the life and death of Wallace’s father, who was a scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Wallace has an masters of fine arts from the University of Montana and a juris doctor from the University of New Mexico.
NMSU’s Nelson-Boswell Reading Series hosts events in Las Cruces so the community can hear the work of distinguished writers, according to a news release sent out announcing the event.
The series is named in honor of writers Antonya Nelson and Robert Boswell, who began their teaching careers at NMSU.
